You don't have to wander far off the highway to become enveloped in the land of giants. Most people who come to see the redwoods travel hundreds if not thousands of miles to only get out of their vehicle, walk a few steps from a parking lot, see a few redwood trees, purchase a souvenir or two and then rush off to the next spot on their itinerary. True, they did see some redwoods, but they really missed out on the magic. Along the Avenue of the Giants, a driving tour of the California Redwoods, there are pull outs and opportunities for short walks among the trees. But to really see the trees, to be engulfed by them, to enter into what seams like another world, untouched by humanity, you have to walk. The farther you walk the greater the experience becomes. Humboldt Redwoods State Park and Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park in Humboldt County as well as Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park in Del Norte County provides multiple opportunities to get away from the road and the crowds and enter into the magical lands of the redwood forests. There are many great hikes, if you walk farther than a mile and a half your chances of running into another person becomes slim, except on the most popular trails. It's these out of the way places I seek, not to just to be alone, but to be embraced by my natural surroundings. To step back into a time and place without technology, roads, vehicles, and man made sounds. Where time slows down, where the wind whispers, and the ancient giants gather.
